Twitter’s CEO Evan Williams stated in a post that Twitter is fast becoming popular with mobile users, especially with the launch of its Twitter for Android phones. Strangely, though, this app is not one of the top 10 apps for Twitter, which makes one wonder how easily Twitter is capturing the mobile and general internet market.
Let’s take a look; Twitter, which launched in 2007, presently boasts about 145 million unique users, with 300,000 users being added daily. The website has a monthly visit rate of over 55 million and ranks as one of the top three social networking sites.
Twitter has a lot to offer its registered users. It has over 300,000 registered apps running various programs and useful software . These are, to be precise, the total number of OAuth apps presently in the system. OAuth is a form of user authentication.Twitter switched to this system sometime back. The move required the company to abandon some older apps, especially the Tweetie, which was re-coded into Twitter for the iPhone. Since April 2010, when Twitter had its Chirp conference, the number of apps had multiplied threefold.
Since April, there has been a 21 percent increase in Twitter’s mobile users which is larger than even the growth of online casino gaming. Of Twitter’s new users, over 16 percent start on its mobile platform. This has increased from a mere 5 percent since Twitter started mobile client branding. The resulted is over 46 percent of Twitter users having at least some sort of mobile tweeting experience.
Twitter has also started growing in revenues, with its new promoted products venture. This is essentially a monetization of their blogs, and using their vast user base as an advertisement option for businesses.
Of the most widely used twitter apps, twitter.com is still on top with over 78 percent users, followed by its mobile version m.twitter.com. iPhone and Blackberry versions are picking up as well.
